  • Reliable source says Terrell Owens will play in the Super Bowl

It looks like McNabb will have Owens to help him try to win in Jacksonville

The Eagles held up their end of the bargain, they are going to the Super Bowl.

Now wide receiver Terrell Owens will hold up his - he's going to play in the game.

A very reliable Eagles source said Owens, who has been out since suffering a sprained ankle and a broken fibula Dec. 19 against Dallas, will play and play a key role in the Super Bowl against New England on Feb. 6.

The highly placed source said he expected Owens would be the team's No. 3 wide receiver on the natural grass surface of AllTel Stadium and play between 30 and 40 plays in the game.

Eagles head coach Andy Reid announced to the Lincoln Financial Field crowd after the team's 27-10 win over Atlanta yesterday that Owens would be back, then backed off it a little in his post-game press conference.

"I got caught up in the emotions," Reid said with a smile. "We'll see. We'll see. He was standing right there, so I had to make him feel good."

Later, Reid admitted that Owens, who caught 77 passes for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, was making progress in his comeback.

"Every day he's getting a little better," Reid said. "He's making progress. You know, we'll see how he does this next week, if he can put a little more pressure on that thing running-wise. You saw him down there walking around - jumping around, actually. We'll just see how he does."

Owens led the Eagles out of the tunnel before the game and spent the game on the sideline playing the role of head cheerleader. He was not in the locker room after the game, at least by the time the media was allowed to enter.

"If he can come back that would be great," wide receiver Freddie Mitchell, who has started in Owens' place, said. "But I think the receivers we had played great the past few weeks. Freddie Mitchell, Greg Lewis, Todd Pinkston, Billy McMullen, we proved everyone wrong."

Now Owens might, too, if he can come back for the Super Bowl.
