  • Steve Smith bashes Eagles' Freddie Mitchell

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is nearly ready to get back on the field, but he was talking in mid-season form Wednesday.

Smith made waves during a pair of national appearances, beginning with a morning interview on the "James Brown Show" on Sporting News Radio and following up with an afternoon appearance on ESPNews' "Hot List."

During both, Smith took the opportunity to bash Philadelphia wide receiver Freddie Mitchell, who has made the most of the spotlight afforded by his playoff performances.

"Freddie Mitchell has 22 catches," Smith told Brown's fill-in host Bob Stelton, referring to Mitchell's regular-season total. "He's not a premier receiver. My son in flag football had 22 catches. That's the level he's on. ...

"Freddie Mitchell can't hold my jock. ... You've got to be kidding me. He's a joke."

In four seasons, Mitchell has 90 receptions for 1,263 yards and five touchdowns. Smith has 158 catches for 2,196 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Mitchell's 22 catches this year came in 16 regular-season games, while Smith had six for 60 yards before breaking his ankle in the opener and being placed on injured reserve.

Mitchell is also the first cousin of Panthers kick returner Rod Smart.

Part of Smith's frustration with his fellow fourth-year receiver -- who refers to himself as "The People's Champion" or "FredEx" -- has to do with their entrance into the league. Mitchell was a first-round pick (25th overall) while Smith was chosen in the third (74th) during the 2001 draft.

"All I have to say ... I was drafted in the third round. He was drafted in the first round," Smith said. "Hey, I'm not going to say it... Bust... Bust... And I'm not talking about Jerome the Bus (Bettis) either. He's garbage, and Steve Smith said it. If he's got a problem, he knows where to find me -- North Carolina."

Smith made a similar set of comments later during the ESPNews appearance, grinning broadly when Mitchell's name was mentioned, but never backing down from his original comments.

    He's a hater

Just like the Patriots and their fans, we have another big mouth crybaby. Smith is just mad cause Mitchell is in the super bowl, and he is sitting on his ass, asking his wife to get him another beer.

I never knew Steve Smith was Jerry Rice.

Ya'll *****z thought we were done without T.O. You forgot all about THE PEOPLE'S CHAMP!!!
