  • Barret Robbins is off the respirator

Former Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins was weaned off his respirator Tuesday and is able to breathe on his own, ESPN's Andrea Kremer has learned.

Robbins has been at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami since he was shot in the chest Jan. 15 after an altercation with three police officers.

Robbins had good muscular tone, was not paralyzed, and was not undergoing physical therapy yet, Robbins' attorney, Ed O'Donnell, told Kremer.

Although Robbins was in "miraculous" condition on Wednesday, according to O'Donnell, on Thursday, Robbins was motionless, unable to respond verbally, and could only nod his head.

According to O'Donnell, Robbins was lucid, had good memory, a good sense of humor, and was bright and alert Wednesday. O'Donnell said Robbins remembered being shot the first time, and he had a memory of the second shot, but had the details wrong.

A corrections officer is still standing outside Robbins' room, since Robbins is still under arrest.

There is no release date set yet. According to O'Donnell, when Robbins is ready to post bond, he has to go to a treatment faciliity and remain there until facility officials notify the court. He also must follow an after-care program.
