  • Barry Bonds back on crutches

Barry Bonds was back on crutches Friday, which might mean a setback in his recovery from right knee surgery, but the slugger and the San Francisco Giants aren't talking.

Bonds had a second arthroscopic surgery on his knee on March 17, and no timetable has been set for his return. However, a source told ESPN's Pedro Gomez that Bonds might not start hitting in a batting cage before mid-May.

Also, sources told Gomez that Bonds isn't following the Giants' rehabilitation plan.

On his own Web site, Bonds said he had been walking up hills and on the beach earlier this week. Sources told Gomez, however, that neither exercise has been prescribed by Giants doctors.

In addition, Gomez reports, Bonds continues his unsupervised workouts with personal trainer Greg Anderson, who has been indicted for allegedly distributing performance-enhancing drugs to elite athletes. It's been more than five weeks since Bonds' second knee surgery and he has yet to begin any baseball-related activities.

When Bonds arrived at SBC Park to speak to a group of disadvantaged middle school students, he made his way to the dugout on crutches and in a golf cart, but he wouldn't say anything specific about his knee.

"All my updates will be on the Web site," Bonds said. "It will be posted [Saturday], and then every few days. [The media] can write what you want. You can read the Web site, but I won't be having updates unless something changes."

Bonds, third on baseball's home run list with 703, underwent his first surgery Jan. 31 but was expected to be available for Opening Day. After a handful of rigorous workouts, Bonds was sent back to San Francisco for more exams, resulting in the second surgery.

Giants trainer Stan Conte has stopped giving updates on Bonds' condition.
