  • Gannon returning for spring camps

Rich Gannon had surgery on his injured throwing shoulder Thursday and is expected to rejoin the Oakland Raiders in the next few days.

The operation took place in Minnesota and was performed by the same doctor who did his shoulder surgery after Gannon's 1993 season with Washington. Gannon missed the 1994 season and then was released by the Redskins.

Last season's NFL MVP was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

The 37-year-old Gannon attempted to throw Tuesday for the first time since being knocked out of Oakland's 17-10 loss to Kansas City on Oct. 20. He was able to raise his arm to throw, but couldn't release the ball.

The Raiders hope to have the 16-year veteran back for spring minicamps. Backup QB Marques Tuiasosopo (knee) also is out for the season, leaving third-stringer Rick Mirer as the starter for the final seven games.
