Michael Vick is back, and next week he'll really be back.
Vick suited up for the first time this season Sunday when he was the Atlanta Falcons' backup quarterback against the Houston Texans. ESPN has learned that, barring any setbacks, Vick will start next week when Atlanta faces the Carolina Panthers.
Vick participated in three practices this past week, rolling out on pass plays and making hard cuts on the knee.
"He [Vick] was able to move around and scramble," Falcons coach Dan Reeves said. "I was surprised by how well he looked."
Vick endured a setback when he suffered a sprained right ankle while being accidentally stepped on during a walk-through Nov. 19. He practiced for the first time since that incident Wednesday and followed up with sharp workouts on Thursday and Friday.
The fastest player in the league at his position, Vick burst onto the scene in his first full year as a starter last season, leading the Falcons back to the playoffs for the first time since 1998. He also made the Pro Bowl.
Vick, 23, completed 231-of-421 passes for 2,936 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 15 games. The NFL's youngest starting quarterback also proved to be a handful out of the pocket as he rushed for 777 yards and eight scores.
The Falcons share the worst record in the NFL at 2-9.
