  • Pacers' Jackson Says New NBA Dress Code Attacks Blacks

Indiana guard Stephen Jackson believes the NBA's new ban on bling-bling is racially motivated, but says he will abide by the rules.

The NBA has announced that a dress code will go into effect at the start of the season. Players will be required to wear business-casual attire when involved in team or league business. They can't wear visible chains, pendants or medallions over their clothes.

Jackson, who is black, said the NBA's new rule about jewelry targets young black males because chains are associated with hip-hop culture, and he said the league is afraid of becoming "too hip-hop." In protest, he wore four chains to the Pacers' exhibition game against San Antonio on Tuesday night.

Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce agreed that the new rule targeted young, black players.

"When I saw the part about chains, hip hop and throwback jerseys, I think that's part of our culture," Pierce said. "The NBA is young black males."

Jackson defended his actions on Wednesday, but said he won't allow his feelings to cause a distraction once the regular season starts.

"They don't want your chains to be out, all gaudy and shiny. But that's the point of them," he said. "I love wearing my jewelry. But I love my job. I love playing basketball more than I love getting fined and getting suspended."

Jackson said he had enough problems last year, when he was suspended for 30 games for his role in the November melee between Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans in Auburn Hills, Mich.

"You have to listen to the people who employ you," he said. "The people who are paying us make the rules. You need to abide by the rules or don't work. I want to work."

Pierce, who said the matter should have been brought to the players' association for a vote, said there are times he may not follow the rule.

"I dress how I feel anyway," he said. "I think I'm just going to continue to dress how I feel. I think there's some days I may take a fine."

Jackson first made his displeasure with the new rule a public matter on Tuesday. He said he hasn't heard from the league office, and doesn't expect to.

"I still have freedom of speech, don't I?" he said. "I didn't disrespect anybody by saying it, so I can say what I want to say."

        You guys are both morons...

I heard Phil Jackson say that the New NBA dress code is an attempt to help reverse some of the negative influence that Rap Music has had upon NBA players.

Is Rap Music also responsible for all the negative aspect of Caucasians?

Have suits and ties worn by the elite Caucasians Americans ended, poverty, intuitional racism, white collar crimes, discrimination, hate, etc. or made them better humanitarian?

Did a suit and tie stop Bill Clinton from stooping to get his “D” sucked in the oval office?

Did a suit and tie stop George Bush from using a lie to send young American soldiers to their deaths in an illegal war?

Have suits and ties stop the executives of America’s top corporations like Arthur Andersen, Enron, Citi Corp, MCI WorldCom, Tyco, etc from lying and stealing?

Have suits and ties stop racist politicians like Jessie Helms, Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott, George Bush, Tom Delay, Dick Chaney, Bill First, etc from cheating, lying, and stealing!

Black players need to take a stand against the racial double standard in sports verses corporate America. It is a know fact t that cocaine is widely used in corporate America, so why isn’t drug screening mandatory for White collar executives and their employees?

Caucasian America, Sports executives, and their media are using money to enslave complacent, ignorant, weak, and sell-out Black players!

When will these players gain the courage and content of character to fight these racist and condescending attacks?

It's about dressing professionally and not looking like some fucking punk kid straight out of the ghetto. Like it or not, boy, it was the correct decision to for the NBA to make moving forward.

This dress code is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Next thing you know they'll have dress codes for rappers.

The NBA is trying to change their image, but they are doing it the wrong way. David Stern doesn't know what he's doing. He forgot what who the core NBA audience is.

Short do you not realize that 75% of the NBA players are black african americans. We all know you'd like to see the old school NBA shorts come back to but this dress-code is honestly stupid. Why would or how does the way someone dresses effect anything that he or she does?

Dress codes are for bored old men, or in Shorts case gay bored old men who really have nothing better to do, so they come up with some bullshit rule just to remind everyone who is in charge.

Dress codes will only piss off the players, nothing better will come from it. If you can find a better in it than your being awfully anal, which I know "Short" you like but come on man.

I totally agree with you on this one Harmon. The dress code isn't going to fix the NBA.

does the NBA have a core audience anymore?

and players need to quit bitching about a dress code.

i made like 20K a year at my job as a MT and had to dress up everyday. i am white. i worked w/ african americans, hispanics, and other crackers. this has nothing to do w/ race.

these spoiled fucks make millions and need to go to men's warehouse and learn to shut the fuck up and do what the people paying them tell them to do.
