If you were scratching your head about some of the officiating calls in Super Bowl XL, you weren't alone. Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren told a few thousand fans at Qwest Field in Seattle yesterday that he wasn't pleased with the officiating either.
His comments might bring a hefty fine from the NFL, which frowns on coaches criticizing officials.
"We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers," Holmgren told the fans. "I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well."
After Holmgren's comment, fans roared, "Refs --!"
A number of debatable calls went against the Seahawks, including a rushing touchdown by Ben Roethlisberger in the first half, a play that appeared to show Roethlisberger was stopped short of the goal line. In addition, wide receiver Darrell Jackson was called for offensive pass interference on a touchdown catch. It appeared Jackson barely made contact with Steelers safety Chris Hope in the end zone before catching Matt Hasselbeck's pass. The touchdown was negated by the penalty.
In the fourth quarter, Hasselbeck threw an interception, then was called for a penalty when he made the tackle on the runback. The officials said Hasselbeck was throwing an illegal block below the waist.
