Raiders owner Al Davis plans to fire head coach Bill Callahan and his coaching staff once the season ends, according to three league sources who have spoken with Davis.
"The walls are closing in around us," Callahan told a friend. Most of the Raider assistants have been looking for jobs.
Callahan could end up joining Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden in Tampa as an assistant head coach. There also has been speculation that he could become Washington's offensive line coach under Steve Spurrier. Callahan was Gruden's line coach in Philadelphia and in Oakland before being elevated to the head coaching position prior to last season.
The Buccaneers were eliminated from the playoffs Saturday by the Atlanta Falcons, and Callahan's Raiders, "the dumbest team in football," were eliminated weeks ago. It is the second time in three seasons that both Super Bowl participants missed the playoffs the following season.
