  • Redskins Sign Arrington to Eight-Year, $80M Extension

The Redskins have made LaVar Arrington one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL.

Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington has agreed to an eight-year, $80 million contract extension with the Washington Redskins, his agent said Friday.

Carl Poston said the deal includes $26.5 million in bonuses, most of which become available immediately. Under Arrington's current contract, he would have earned just under $10 million in salary and bonuses for the next three seasons.

The Redskins were eager to sign Arrington to a long-term contract that would accommodate the team's salary cap constraints. The deal replaces the last years of Arrington's current contract and defers some of those costs to later years.

"We're happy he'll be wearing burgundy and gold for a very long time," Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said.

Arrington declined a $50 million, seven-year contract extension from the Redskins earlier this month.

Arrington was selected to his third consecutive Pro Bowl last week. He has career highs this season with 112 tackles, seven forced fumbles and 13 quarterback pressures. He also has six sacks.

"This is really a compliment to Dan Snyder on his commitment to winning," Poston said.
The Redskins signed Arrington as the second overall choice in the 2000 NFL draft. The former Penn State star led the team in tackles in 2001 and led the NFL with 11 sacks in 2002.

The Arrington contract my as well be written on toilet paper. All that does is clear salary cap room. Arrington was due $11 million next season. This extension reworks that figure. Many teams manage the cap in a way so that they do not have to do deals like this. But congrats Lavar- I'm still waiting for the blocked field goal and the lavar leap on on 4th and 1. For what Lavar does I say the skins could save a ton of money and let him go.

But any ways, the skins aren't going any where next year. Bailey was offered a new contract before the season started and Bailey and his agent turned it down. I wouldn't be surprised if he was gone next season.
