  • Delmon Young suspended 50 games for bat toss

Delmon Young will also have to perform at least 50 hours of community service for his bat toss.

Top Tampa Bay prospect Delmon Young was suspended 50 games without pay by the International League on Tuesday, two weeks after throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the arm.

Randy Mobley, President of the International League, said that the suspension, retroactive to April 27, is the longest known penalty in the 123-year history of the International League, according to the information uncovered during the investigation. The reprimand also includes a minimum of 50 hours of community service. Young earns $500,000, making the suspension cost him approximately $175,000 in salary. Mobley said he looked at precedents established in baseball, and in other sports.

Immediately after Young threw the bat, he retreated to the clubhouse and phoned Devil Rays general manager Andrew Friedman to tell him what happened, and Mobley told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that Young's cooperation with his investigation "could not have been better.... He knew right from the start that he had messed up big-time, and his attitude continued to be that all along." Young was very interested in including the community service aspect of his penalty all along, Mobley said.

"The Tampa Bay Devil Rays fully support the decision," the team said in a statement. "As stated before, we do not tolerate this type of conduct from anyone in the Devil Rays' organization."

In his investigation, Mobley said he could not determine, with absolute certainty, that Young had intended to hit the umpire when he threw the bat.

"If I had, I would have suspended him for the entire season," Mobley told Olney. "He explained to me that it was his intent to throw his bat and throw his helmet back toward to the plate to show his disgust with the call, as we've seen in other situations, and there was a miscalculation.

"My goal was to arrive at something fair and just, and I feel comfortable that we've done that."

The 20-year-old Young, brother of Detroit star Dmitri Young and considered one of the best players in the minors, was ejected in the first inning following a called third strike in the Durham Bulls' Triple-A game at Pawtucket, R.I., on April 26.

When Young took his time leaving the batter's box, the umpire tossed him. Young then flipped his bat underhand and it sailed end over end, striking the umpire. The umpire, whose name was not released, did not appear injured and remained in the game.

"I sincerely regret my actions in the game yesterday," Young said in a statement in April released by the office of his agent, Arn Tellem. "Regrettably, in the heat of the competition my emotions got the better of me.

"My behavior was completely unacceptable. I want everyone to know that I recognize that it is never right to throw a bat and I certainly never intended for the bat to make contact with the umpire. Nevertheless, I owe an apology to my team, the fans and most importantly to the umpire, for the incident. I am sorry."

In Double-A ball last year, Young was suspended for three games by the Southern League for bumping the chest of plate umpire Jeff Latter.

Regular minor league umpires are on strike this season. Fill-ins umps -- most of them with college or high school experience -- have been working in their place. Minor league teams are not releasing the names of the replacements.

"It's an unfortunate incident and there should be no place for actions like that in the game of baseball," the umpire said in a statement released by Pawtucket. "Any official should not be treated like that. He embarrassed himself and his teammates."

I know past actions should not be taken into account, but given the nature of this man the International league did the right thing.

The Devil Rays organization should step up and suspend him for the remainder of the season without pay. He has shown him immaturity on several occasions while in this organization, including bad mouthing the Devil Rays front office and coaches. All while never even proving that he has earned a promotion to the big leagues.

He needs to be taken down a notch and shown that he is not bigger than the team or the game.

He didn't mean to hit the umpire. And even if he did who cares? It wasn't a strike. The umpire is lucky Young didn't beat him with the bat lol.

The umpire wasn't hurt. The punishment is about right.

Kid, you might be the dumbest motherfucker I've ever seen online. The pitch WAS a strike and because that punk bitch didn't get his way HE THREW HIS FUCKING BASEBALL BAT AT A DEFENSELESS UMPIRE.

Young is from the 'hood where, apparently, your kind handles those situations in such a manner. The rest of us civilized citizens will continue to look down on SAVAGES like Delmon Young...and people with the childish and foolish mindset like yourself.

            Piss off, shitdick

McBain would agree with my sentiments but not the language. My point is correct. Fuck this generation. Fucking teenagers these days have no respect for authority. Dumbasses think they deserve respect and should get away with things just because they can. Assholes.

So because I don't agree with you I'm an asshole? Gee that makes a lot of sense. Young didn't mean to hit the umpire. Yes it was wrong, but he didn't try to hurt the guy. And it was not a stike. Look at the video again. The catcher pulls the ball in. The umpire is a scab so that just proves he sucks. And you can suck my balls.

so if young threw that bat unintentionally at the ump, but it hit his dome and put him in a severe coma, would a 50 day suspension justify his action?

and wouldn't it be funny, hypothetically, if young were to end his suspension before the ump recovered from his coma?

my point is, in this case, judge the action not the consequence.

HE THREW A FUCKING BAT AT AN UMPIRE! THAT ALONE DESERVES A YEAR SUSPENSION. IN FOOTBALL, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF TERRELL OWENS KICKED REFEREE ED HOCKULI SQUARE IN THE NUTS BUT DIDN'T HURT HIM?? JUST FINE HIM BECAUSE ED DIDN'T SUFFER ANY PAIN?

Child, you're in way over you're head. You just don't understand how stupid and fucking assinine your logic is on this issue. Now, please apologize for making a complete ass out of yourself and for embarassing your family name. You, child, are entirely what is going to be the downfall of your generation.

Fucking punk bitches...the lot of you rabble.

Oh, kid - it was a strike. It's not where the catcher catches the ball but where it crosses the plate beforehand. It was a s-t-r-i-k-e. I guess your substitute dad or whomever the whore of a mother you have is fucking for gas money this week didn't teach you that.

Wow. A ball sucking reference. Weak. Try again, kid.

Keep crying like a little bitch because I don't agree with you. So you have to sling insults? Gee that really shows how smart you are.

You're a fucking internet tough guy. If I saw you on the street I bet I could beat the living shit out of you and then piss on your face.

Delmon Young DID NOT mean to hit the umpire. If he had intended on hitting him I'm pretty sure he would have done more damage. That has to be taken into consideration. 50 games sounds about right. It is still the biggest punishment for anyone in the minors.

And that pitch was a ball, so wipe you horse cum from your eyes and watch the video again, you ball sucking trick.

Proof? He knew saw the bat hit the umpire then turned his back and walked into the dugout. He showed no remorse which means it was on purpose. He's so much of a pussy bitch, like you, that he wasn't man enough to issue a personal apology. He had a statement read to the media prepared by his agent.

                        That's bitch shit.

50 games isn't enough. The "biggest punishment" thing doesn't matter since the punishment isn't harsh enough. He's out what - 2 months? Big deal.

That's funny considering the video doesn't show what he does after he through the bat. What was he suppose to do after he through it? He saw the umpire wasn't hurt. He knows he messed up, but it wasn't on purpose you fucking sperm stain. You claim you are smart but all you have shown is that you are a little trick who gets butt hurt when someone doesn't agree. You talk shit like a ******. Get off your parents computer and get back to watch queer as folk.

The punishment was enough. Accept it like you accept the gay porn you download on your parents computer.

And of course the manager is going to say it was a strike. He doesn't want to add fuel to the fire and he doesn't want to get fined.

And the only then you would be choking on is my cum. Open up wide cock boy!

short irish guy. You can read right? well read this cock boy!

                              http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/column...1&lid=tab3pos1

Delmon Young probably could have been in the big leagues by mid-June, playing the summer game in Comerica Park or Citizens Bank Park, Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, beginning what most scouts believe will be a prolific career.

Instead, Young will be at the extended spring training program of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for most of the next 41 days, taking batting practice and perhaps participating in intrasquad games, but nothing real. Nobody hits .300 or .400 in extended spring games because nobody really keeps track, officially.

Young has been given an appropriate 50-game sentence to baseball purgatory, and whether he ever goes back there, after his release, depends entirely on how Young conducts himself as he returns.

Young is young and made a mistake, but nobody has ever seen a mistake like his, from anyone old or young. After being ejected from a Triple-A game on April 26, Young turned and threw a bat at the umpire -- a shocking act made worse by the velocity at which he fired the bat. A few inches higher and Young could've seriously injured the umpire.

The suspension will cost Young, who earns a salary of $500,000 this year, about $145,000. He'll be doing some community service, at least 50 hours, and for the rest of his career he'll hear taunts from the stands about his bat-throwing incident.

Furthermore, Young probably will lose time in the big leagues that he'll likely never get back. Oh, sure, he'll get to the majors one day, maybe in August or September, but the young slugger who once predicted he would be in the big leagues as a 19-year-old almost certainly won't be there in June or July.

If he has another similar incident, Young probably would face at least a yearlong suspension, perhaps longer. He might be something of a marked man now, among umpires, among teammates, among coaches, some of whom will assume that Young could be a problem.

He must absorb all of this and grow from the experience; and, quite frankly, he should feel lucky he'll get to play at all this summer, whether at a minor league complex or a major league park.
