The Philadelphia Eagles officially learned Monday that they will not have their most explosive player available for the postseason. The Eagles announced running back Brian Westbrook, the team leader with 13 touchdowns, will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday for a torn left triceps tendon.
Westbrook will have the surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama.
Westbrook was injured in the first half of the regular season finale against the Washington Redskins on December 27. He had been holding out hope to play in the postseason despite the injury.
In his second season since being selected in the third round out of Villanova, the speedy Westbrook was the Eagles' top offensive threat this season. He rushed for 613 yards and seven touchdowns to go along with 37 receptions for 337 yards and four TDs while also returning two punts for scores.
Despite the loss of Westbrook, the Eagles still have depth in the backfield with Duce Staley and Correll Buckhalter.
The Eagles (12-4), who won their third straight NFC East title this season, host the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round on Sunday.
