  • Torre will not be fired, has Steinbrenner's support

Joe Torre will remain as manager of the New York Yankees, finally getting the word from owner George Steinbrenner after the team's surprise elimination from the playoffs Saturday.

Torre spoke with Steinbrenner on the telephone Tuesday, shortly before he walked into the interview room at Yankee Stadium and made the announcement.

"He gave me his support," Torre said. "I'm just pleased I'm able to stay on and do this."

Torre didn't go into detail about his conversations with Steinbrenner.

But Steinbrenner, in a statement issued through spokesman Howard Rubenstein, said:

"I spoke to Joe Torre today and I told him: `You're back for the year. I expect a great deal from you and the entire team. I have high expectations, and I want to see enthusiasm, a fighting spirit and a team that works together. Responsibility is yours, Joe, and all of the Yankees.'

"Yes, I am deeply disappointed about our loss this year," Steinbrenner added. "We have to do better, and I deeply want a championship. It's about time."

Torre said he also spoke to Steinbrenner on Monday "for probably 15, 20 minutes, and we discussed a lot of things: the team, what we do from here and things like that."

The Daily News reported Sunday that Steinbrenner was expected to fire Torre after the Yankees were eliminated by the Detroit Tigers, the Yankees' second straight elimination in the first round of the AL playoffs. The paper said the likely replacement would be Lou Piniella, who served two terms as Yankees manager in the 1980s. On Tuesday, the New York Post said on its cover that Torre's job was safe.

Torre didn't make any public statements Sunday or Monday as camera crews camped outside his home in suburban Westchester.

"I thought I had the cure for cancer or something," Torre said.

While the Yankees won four World Series titles in Torre's first five seasons, they haven't won any since 2000, angering the demanding Steinbrenner. They haven't reached the World Series since 2003.

"He requires a lot. He expects a lot. We know that," Torre said. "You can't pick and choose the parts you like about working for George Steinbrenner. You have to understand the whole package. He requires us to be the best team out there and to be able to perform like it."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said team executives gave Steinbrenner their opinions on Torre.

"I believe he is the right man for this job at this point in time," Cashman said.

Torre, hired after the 1995 season, has one year remaining on his contract. He said he wasn't sure whether he wanted to manage beyond 2007.

Late in the season and during the playoffs, he made several controversial decisions. He moved right fielder Gary Sheffield to first base when he returned from wrist surgery, and put Hideki Matsui back in left in place of Melky Cabrera when Matsui came back from a broken wrist.

The most debated decision was when he dropped Alex Rodriguez, baseball's highest-paid player at $252 million, to the No. 8 spot in the batting order for Saturday's season-ending 8-3 loss.

Rodriguez was repeatedly booed at Yankee Stadium this season, his third with New York.

"I want to believe that, yes, as far as I'm concerned, Alex Rodriguez is one of the important pieces to this puzzle here," Torre said.

With 1,973 regular-season wins, Torre is 10th on the career list and third among active managers behind Tony La Russa of the St. Louis Cardinals (2,297) and Bobby Cox (2,171) of the Atlanta Braves.

Torre has the longest uninterrupted term for a Yankees manager since Casey Stengel held the job for 12 years from 1949-60. Under Torre, the Yankees have gone 1,079-699. He trails only Joe McCarthy (1,460) and Stengel (1,149) for victories among Yankees managers.

Clueless Joe returns to sleep on the bench for 7 million reasons

Joe Torre does not manage. He is a millionaire public speaker who has made it to the Hall of Fame thanks to George Steinbrenner. Torre should be Bush's media man because he spins every loss, and every choke away from himself and makes it look like the players failed.

His managing career before NY is below .500 and he has the balls to take the credit but not the pride to resign. He and George have 7 million reasons to come back as he was overpaid at the same proportion of his players. His lineups, his preparation for games and series and his actual in game managing is pathetic. He is a myth an icon to his players and a former abused child so his players and the fans love him dearly, but they cannot win the championship with him because he is clueless and cares less.

I've watched the circus come to town,,, the media circus... Like circling vultures, the tabloids and talkies have descended over the corpse of Torre... But wait,,, the body rises, ready to resume his post in the first base dugout and earn the $7 million George still owes him... Not to be outdone,,, and still thirsting for blood,,, the vultures circle a new corpse,,, ARod... And the death watch continues,,, Torre stays so,,, ARod has to go...

While the New York Metropolitans are about to face the vaunted Saint Louis Cardinals,,, the media has kept the four day dead Yankees on the back pages and on the air waves,,, George's grand plan??? It's working,,, the Yankees are still in our hearts and minds...

So now,,, having granted Torre a one year reprieve,,, Cashman, Swindal, Levine and the Boss must decide the future course of the Yankee ship. By all accounts from the circling vultures,,, keeping Torre means trading ARod... The media proclaimed "best player in the game's" future will maintain the back page focus on the Yankees for a long as George wants to string this along... ARod to the Angels, ARod to the White Sox, ARod to the Marlins if we want to pay his way... We just have to convince ARod he has to go. And,,, if his quotes are accurate,,, ARod has said, I want to be here, if they want me... Having chosen Torre for another year,,, the vultures make it clear,,, that ARod becomes the scapegoat...

A servicable third baseman (Figgins) and some young pitching (Ervin Santana and a prospect) from California has been discussed... Cashman has been quoted as saying there are a number of other suitors for ARod's talents... What is apparent to me,,, is that by choosing Torre, the Yankees are willing to jettison ARod. If I can believe those media vultures,,, ARod is truly disliked by the majority of players in the major leagues. He's a cancer in the clubhouse but,,, the majority of general managers in the major leagues love his talent and star appeal... What's left to ask??? The question is,,, where does he go,,, to whom,,, for what???

Tucked away in the back pages of today's Newsday is this blurb... When asked if he'd consider first base,,, Hideki Matsui responded in the positive,,, whatever they want me to do... Somewhere south of the border this winter,,, will we see Matsui playing first base???

What this team lacks,,, is front line pitching,,, both starters and relievers. With Torre's penchant to burn out a bull pen,,, we can never have enough healthy, hard throwing arms... The Siebu Lions are about to post Matsuzaka and nobody outbids George... Can we convince Randy that it's over??? There's more back surgery scheduled for this winter... I would never wish ill on anyone but,,, if this surgery isn't successful,,, will Randy walk away??? Mussina is most likely gone and so is Wright... Zito will be out there,,, and the Yankees have never won a title without a left handed starter in their rotation... Hughes is also an option,,, he just might be ready. And then there's Pavano... I've got to think he's rested...

All I'm saying is,,, what we have for next year is not all that bad... Chemistry being the paramount question... Melky in left, on the cheap, Damon in center and Abreu in right... Matsui at first, Cano and Jeter with a big ?, at third, and Posada behind the plate... It all comes back to the pitching...

It's not even winter and already it's hot stove time. With Torre here for another year,,, I'm confident that things will be alright...
