  • Next Raiders coach: Could it be Norv Turner?

Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Norv Turner flew to Oakland on Thursday to meet with Al Davis regarding the Raiders' head coaching job, ESPN's Hank Goldberg reports.

Reports out of South Florida indicated that the Raiders requested permission earlier Wednesday to speak with Turner about the position, which opened when Bill Callahan was fired at the end of the regular season.

It is unknown whether Turner would accept an offer, if one is made.

Turner, who became the Dolphins' offensive coordinator in 2002, was 49-59-1 in six-plus seasons as the Washington Redskins' head coach before being fired late in the 2000 season. Turner also interviewed for the head coach vacancy in Tampa Bay in 2002 before joining the Dolphins.

The Dolphins finished 24th in total offense in 2003, which is the franchise's second-worst ranking in the past 23 seasons. But Ricky Williams had the two most prolific rushing seasons in franchise history under Turner.

The Raiders struck an agreement in principle with Sean Payton as Callahan's replacement, ESPN.com reported Tuesday, but that agreement fell apart Wednesday and Payton decided to remain with the Cowboys as their assistant head coach.

"There is no timetable [for hiring a coach]," Davis said in a rare meeting with reporters Wednesday that lasted more than an hour at team headquarters. "The thing is to try to be right. I had hoped something would happen last weekend and it didn't happen."

Davis fired Callahan earlier this month after two seasons and a 17-18 record. The Raiders played in last season's Super Bowl, but Callahan came under fire this year from many veteran players who wanted him removed. Indeed, Callahan was, after a 4-12 season. He was hired last week as the new head coach at the University of Nebraska.
