So the choice is Ohio State. The nation’s No. 1 football prospect, quarterback Terrelle Pryor, picked the Buckeyes today at Jeannette High School.
Thus ends a major recruiting battle between arch rivals Michigan and Ohio State – the top two schools that the 6-foot-6, 225-pound, dual-threat quarterback was reportedly considering.
The two-sport star announced his decision Wednesday at Jeannette High School, about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh, where he had one of the greatest prep careers in Pennsylvania history.
Flanked by his parents, brother, sister and other supporters, the 6-foot-6 Pryor wasted no time with his decision: "If everyone's here," he said, "University of Ohio State."
He then unzipped his windbreaker to reveal an Ohio State T-shirt and donned an OSU hat.
Pryor picked Ohio State over Michigan, Penn State and Oregon.
Pryor said Oregon was too far away and Penn State too rural. He said he liked Michigan and new coach Rich Rodriguez, but felt that he has a better shot at making it to the NFL by going to Ohio State.
He said he also picked OSU because of his relationship with fellow OSU recruits. He liked coach Jim Tressel a lot. And he would like to be used in a Tim Tebow-like role. He can be the backup QB for a year and enter games in certain situations like Tebow did during Florida's national championship season.
"I couldn’t go wrong either way. I could have went to Michigan and maybe started. At Ohio State, (starter) Todd Boeckman is still there, but I can learn from the senior. "
On what some folks with the NFL told him, he said: "Some of them said Michigan because of their offense. They also said Ohio State could be good because you can learn. You can jump in and out and play like a Tebow role. That’d be a good thing and you can learn to be a great quarterback."
Pryor said he didn't make his mind until 11 a.m. this morning He talked to U-M coach Rich Rodriguez this morning and Rodriguez was still recruiting him.
"There never was a leader. It was just feel comfortable with Jim Tressel. Not that I wouldn’t be comfortable with Coach Rodriguez, but that’s my choice."
"I shouldn’t feel bad right now, but I feel sort of bad because I said no to Michigan."
Pryor was reportedly leaning toward Ohio State on Feb. 6 – National Signing Day – when he held a news conference to announce he was delaying his decision because he needed more time to make a choice.
Pryor is the only Pennsylvania player to both rush and pass for at least 4,000 yards in football. He also scored 2,285 points in basketball. For now, Pryor said he does not plan to play basketball in college.
He said at the time that he was going to take official visits to Oregon and Penn State, but that never happened.
He has taken official visits to Michigan and OSU and has taken several unofficial visits to Penn State.
