  • Steve McNair Found Shot To Death

Former Titans quarterback Steve McNair has been killed. Police said McNair suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville.

The incident happened near 2nd South & Lea Avenue. The call came into police at 1:35 p.m. A crowd began to gather in the area where Steve McNair's body was found Saturday afternoon.

"When police officers arrived in response to that call, they found two individuals who had been shot to death inside the residence: one female, one male. We now know that the male deceased is Steve McNair. The female deceased has been tentatively identified. We're working to confirm that and then notify her next of kin," said Don Aaron with Metro Police on the situation.

That female victim's identity was not released as of 4:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

"There were persons who were around the complex today who have been taken to headquarters for questioning," Don Aaron explained. However, he made it clear that there were no suspects in custody at the time.

According to Don Aaron with the Metro Nashville Police Department, no suspects have been taken into custody. Several people were being taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Titan's owner ‘Bud' Adams Jr. released the following statement on the Titan's web site:

"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today. He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."

NewsChannel 5's Hope Hines, Chief Sports Reporter said Brad Hopkins, former All Pro Left Tackle, was very upset by the death of Steve McNair. He said he was dissapointed, and doesn't understand how people can take lives so violently.

Hopkins said this is an example of how no one is immune to violence.

"Steve was my friend, and that's the difference. I remember his first five minutes in the facility. Every walk he took, I was probably right next to him. We fought and bled together," said Hopkins. "Here's a man who was husband and a father. He meant a lot to a lot of people. Not just people on the football field," Hopkins continued.

Just saw on the news, the girl's name is Sahel Kazemi. She's 20 years old and got a DUI on thursday night in an escalade that is in McNair's name. McNair was with her at the time of the DUI. Apartment was locked when they were first found.

As far as the bodies - McNair was shot multiple times, girl had one shot in the head. They said that as of now they are not looking for a suspect. Sounds like she killed him, then shot herself in the head.

Okay, the first rule when dating crazy 20 yr. old vagina is to make sure there are no firearms or other deadly weapons accessible. Also, never spend the night and ALWAYS break up over the phone.

Police Release Identity of Woman Found Dead with McNair

Sahel Kazemi was found dead along with Steve McNair, Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Investigates has learned about the bizarre incident involving McNair and the young woman found dead with him Saturday. That woman was arrested two days ago on D.U.I. charges.

NewsChannel5's chief investigative reporter Phil Williams dug up the arrest documents and uncovered the connection McNair had to the woman.

The young woman, Sahel Kazemi, was arrested just before 2 a.m. Thursday after an officer spotted her speeding down Broadway. She was driving a black, 2007 Cadillac Escalade that, according to public records, she owns along with McNair. McNair was in the vehicle at the time; however, he was not charged with anything and was allowed to leave. He left in a taxi.

The vehicle is registered at the address of McNair's restaurant on Jefferson Street.

According to the arrest affidavit, Kazemi's "eyes were bloodshot and watery. She had an obvious odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her breath but denied any consumption. According to the police report, "She said she was not drunk, but high.

Kazemi was arrested by the same officer who arrested McNair on DUI charges back in 2003.

That officer's name is Shawn Taylor. That case was thrown out after a judge ruled Taylor did not have probable cause to stop McNair.

According to public records, the young woman in this case, Sahel Kazemi, moved here from Orange Park, Florida.

The bonding company that bailed her out refused to say if Steve McNair was on the one who posted her bond.

In a press conference, Don Aaron with Metro Police said McNair was shot multiple times, and Kazemi was shot once in the head.

He was found seated on the couch. Kazemi was found on the floor in the living room. A pistol was found near her body.

Kazemi was an employee of Dave and Busters at Opry Mills mall.

Looks like murder-suicide. Never mess with another man's rhubarb...

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair was killed in an apparent murder-suicide with a young woman he met at a local restaurant and have been dating for at least a few months.

McNair, the hometown hero who did extensive charity work in Nashville, died of several gunshots and was found on the sofa, police said. Sahel Kazemi, 20, was found alongside him in a Second Avenue condo he rented. She had a single gunshot wound to her head; a pistol was found near her body.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said they were leaning toward certain scenarios based on the evidence, but they hadn't ruled anything out. Still, they were not actively looking for suspects Saturday night.

"The medical examiner will be conducting autopsies (Sunday)," Aaron said. "We expect to make additional conclusions after the autopsy process."

Though much of the attention was on the Second Avenue crime scene, police also swarmed at the Cherry Creek apartment complex in Hermitage. They were questioning neighbors who said they often saw McNair visiting Kazemi. Sometimes, neighbors said, she would arrive home in a limousine in the early morning hours. She showed up with a new black car she said was a gift from her boyfriend.

She was arrested in that car, a black Cadillac Escalade registered to she and McNair, just two days before the deaths. She was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to take a breath test.

Keith Norfleet, Kazemi's boyfriend for four years before they broke up five months ago, said he came to pick up the car for Kazemi.

Norfleet said McNair was in the car with her when the stop occurred, a fact that was not in the police affadavit but was confirmed by police Saturday night. McNair later bailed Kazemi out, according to bail bondsmen.

Norfleet said she told him she was seeing McNair, who she met while working as a waitress at Dave & Busters. He was worried about her dating a married man and hopeful they'd get back together. They had been living together for four years, since they moved from her family's home in Jacksonville, Fla., to Nashville.

Friends paint picture of McNair's final hours

In the last few hours of Steve McNair's life, the celebrated former NFL quarterback was out with friends and enjoying the city that loved him for his football greatness and community involvement.

But what was supposed to be a long Fourth of July weekend of socializing and relaxing turned deadly, sending the city of Nashville into a state of shock.

On Saturday, McNair and 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi were found dead in a downtown condominium. McNair had been shot four times - twice in the head and twice in the chest. Kazemi had a single gunshot wound to her head.

Metro Police have ruled McNair's death a homicide while refraining to classify Kazemi's death as a suicide or homicide until they have completed their investigation.

Kazemi was a waitress at Dave & Buster's in OpryMills and it was there she apparently first met McNair a few months ago. Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron said that McNair and Kazemi were in a steady relationship and dating.

McNair was known to frequent area clubs and bars like Dave & Buster's, never hesitating to pose for pictures or sign autographs. While on these outings, he would often stop and chat with friends and business acquaintances.

The night of Friday, July 3, began without fanfare and, as usual, where McNair went he was noticed and chatted up friends.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., McNair and a woman identified as Kazemi were outside the Losers nightclub, at 1911 Division St.

The couple was sitting in a black Cadillac Escalade and were spotted and approached by local fund-raiser and event promoter Brent Young. According to Young, Kazemi was sitting in the driver's seat and McNair, who was in the passenger seat, got out of the vehicle to speak with him.

Kazemi stayed in the vehicle and Young says that while he waved at her, he did not speak with her.

According to Young, he and McNair spoke of how excited the former Titans quarterback was that his life was coming together again, and was excited about the opening of his new restaurant, Gridiron9. They spoke of Young putting together a grand opening party for him in the next few weeks and also of the possibility of McNair's participation in an upcoming charity golf tournament.

Asked to expand on McNair's condition and state of mind Young said that McNair was "sober and in a great mood."

At this point Young said that he invited McNair to stop by the nightclub Mai Nashville that evening for an event that he was attending.

Sometime after that conversation, Young says that he saw McNair and an unknown man enter Mai, at 125 12th Ave. N. Mai was hosting an event with musician Aaron Carter and his brother Nick of the group Backstreet Boys.

Kazemi was not in the club, according to Young, due to the fact that she was under age.

McNair apparently stayed a short time and left, heading toward the Blue Moon Lagoon Restaurant on Basswood Drive in the Rock Harbor Marina.

According to several NashvillePost.com sources, it is at Blue Moon Lagoon where McNair's evening took an ominous turn.

While sitting with friends at the restaurant (sources say that Kazemi was not in the party), a white woman in her early 20s, about 5-foot-4, approached McNair and accused him of slipping her a "roofie" a year ago.

The woman then told McNair, according to sources, that her boyfriend was going to kill him.

Roofie is a slang term for Rohypnol, a sedative dating back to the early 1970s that is used in hospitals for deep sedation, but is now a fairly infamous date-rape drug.

After confronting McNair, sources say that the woman was asked to leave the restaurant. As of now, there is no known connection between the blond woman's warning and the events that unfolded just a few hours later. It could well be an eerie coincidence. Still, Metro Police are interviewing patrons and staff members at Blue Moon Lagoon.

One of those in attendance at Blue Moon Lagoon was McNair's close friend Doug Crow. Crow is co-owner of popular Nashville restaurants, including The Crow's Nest, The Corner Pub in the Woods, The Alley and Dalton's in Bellevue and The Corner Pub in Midtown.

Multiple attempts to reach Crow have been unsuccessful and friends tell NashvillePost.com that he has been "shattered" by the loss of what they called "his best friend Steve McNair."

Sources say that when McNair finally left the Blue Moon Lagoon in the early hours of July 4, Crow had a driver take McNair home. They say that the driver took McNair home alone.

              Police: Shootings a murder-suicide

Former NFL star Steve McNair was shot dead in his sleep last week by a 20-year-old girlfriend distraught about mounting financial problems and her belief that he was seeing someone else, police said Wednesday.

Sahel Kazemi "was spinning out of control" when she shot McNair four times as he dozed on a sofa early Saturday, then turned the gun on herself, Police Chief Ronal Serpas said.

Interviews with friends revealed that she was making payments on two cars, her rent was doubling and she suspected the married McNair was having a second affair with another young woman.

She told a friend on Friday that "My life is a ball of s--- and I should end it," Serpas said.

Police earlier had labeled McNair's death a homicide, but waited for further tests and the revelations about Kazemi's personal problems before concluding that she pulled the trigger of a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol in a condominium McNair rented with a friend.

McNair, 36, a quarterback for the Tennessee Titans most of his career, met Kazemi six months ago at a sports cafe where she was a waitress and his family often ate. She seemed happy and eager to build a life with him, but something went wrong.

"We do know that she was clearly sending a message during the last five to seven days of her life that things were going bad quickly," Serpas said, though there was no indication she told anyone she planned to harm McNair.

Serpas said detectives learned that Kazemi recently found out about another young woman she thought McNair was romantically involved with and had even followed that woman home, though she did not confront her.

Serpas said police believe McNair was asleep when he was killed because there were no defensive wounds. After shooting McNair in the head, Kazemi apparently shot him twice in the chest before shooting him again in the head.

Before shooting herself, she sat next to his body and "tried to stage it so she would fall in his lap," Serpas said. She did, but her body slid to the floor and ended up at McNair's feet. The gun was found underneath her.

Kazemi's family told reporters that the woman was so confident McNair was divorcing his wife of 12 years that she was preparing to sell her furniture and move in with him.

But associate Mike Mu, who has worked with McNair's charitable association for years, said earlier Wednesday that McNair's wife, Mechelle McNair, "didn't know who this girl is." No records of divorce proceedings have surfaced. The McNairs have four children.

Two days before the shooting, police stopped Kazemi driving a Cadillac Escalade sport utility vehicle that McNair had given her for her birthday in May.

According to an arrest affidavit, Kazemi had bloodshot eyes and alcohol on her breath. She refused a breath test and told an officer "she was not drunk, she was high." She was charged with DUI. McNair was with her but not charged. He later made her bail.

Serpas said that even though both her name and McNair's were on the Cadillac's title, she was apparently responsible for making payments. She was also making payments on another car after she couldn't sell it.

Kazemi had no history of violence, but "on the last several days of her life it's obvious that she made some very poor decisions," Serpas said.

Mechelle McNair has not spoken publicly since the shooting. Bishop Joseph W. Walker III of Mount Zion Baptist Church, which the McNairs have attended since moving to Nashville in 1997, said Wednesday that she is doing as well as can be expected.

"Her faith is what's sustaining her now," he said. "We haven't talked about the circumstances of his death. She is processing it in a private way. It's obviously devastating on so many levels."

A memorial service is set for Thursday night in Nashville, with the funeral Saturday in his native Mississippi.

The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback was being remembered Wednesday at the stadium where he played much of his career. The Tennessee Titans opened LP Field for fans to watch video highlights of McNair's 13-year NFL career and look at photos of the quarterback. There was also a book for them to write messages that will be given to the family.

McNair was known as "Air McNair" for his passing prowess at Alcorn State in Mississippi. In 2000, he helped lead the Titans to the Super Bowl, where they ended up a yard short of a touchdown on the last play of the game when they trailed by seven points.

He spent the last two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring from the NFL last year.
