Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau's office will oppose ex-Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress' bid to enter a work release program, sources said Monday.
The disgraced Super Bowl hero applied for the state corrections department program a day before Thanksgiving - and less than two months into the two-year prison sentence he is serving at Oneida Correctional Facility on gun possession charges.
Under prison rules, Burress, 32, can apply within two years of being eligible for parole. His first parole hearing is June 2011. Prison officials are expect to rule on the request next month, which means Burress could soon be home with his pregnant wife and toddler son, Elijah.
The program allows inmates to live at home and work at a pre-approved job, but also forces them to return to prison as many as three days and nights a week.
Burress began his sentence Sept. 22, about 10 months after accidentally shooting himself through the right thigh with an illegal Glock handgun he carried inside a crowded nightclub.
The .40-caliber mishap ended his Giant's career and cost him most of a $35 million contract - though he is widely expected to try to rejoin the NFL.
His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, had no comment yesterday.
Prison officials said that if his application is approved, Burress would be released "immediately."
